Set upon a rocky ledge high above the town, the impressive ruins of the castle of Dürnstein dominate the landscape for many miles around. The castle, which used to serve as the head quarter of the Kuenringers and as the prison of the famous Richard the Lionheart in 1192/1193, is connected to the town of Dürnstein by means of an impressively intact town wall. After a 20-minute walk uphill, you will be rewarded with an incredible view of the Danube Valley.
Picturesque on a cliff above the Danube lies the former Augustinian Monastery Dürnstein. The blue church tower is considered the landmark of the Wachau. With the newly designed exhibition “Discovery of the Precious”, visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the spiritual program that underlies the construction of the Dürnstein Abbey and to reflect on “the good – the beautiful – the true”. The Abbey is open daily from May to the end of October and can be visited independently, via audio guide or guided tour.

The Domäne Wachau, as a member of the community “VINEA Wachau Nobilis Districtus” aspire the highest qualities and offers the categories “Steinfeder, Federspiel and Smaragd”. Only grapes of the Wachau valley are handled, the buying-in of grapes, cider or wine from other regions are strictly forbidden. After this successful reframing the Domäne Wachau is one of the 10 best white wine producers of Austria. There is the possibility of visiting the winery twice a week – with a guided tour through the vault and a wine tasting.
The history of viniculture in and around Krems dates 2000 years back. The benefitted region with the mild climate, the ground conditions and the competence of the vintners developed the Wachau valley and the region of Krems to the best wine-growing area of Austria. 1938 the vintner guild of Krems and Stein found the community of Winzer Krems. Experience more about the founding, history, culture and taste of the wine in one of the guided tours through the winery, cellar, ware house and treasures of the Winzer Krems – “SANDGRUBE 13”.
The Baroque Abbey of Göttweig is situated on a mountain in the far East of the Wachau, South of Krems. Göttweig offers many interesting sights to see: the museum in the Emperor’s apartments with annual exhibitions of the monastery’s art collections, the Emperor’s staircase with the stunning ceiling frescos by local painter Paul Troger, the opulently ornamented apartments of the Emperor and the Princes, and the church with its crypt and its cloister.
The Abbey of Melk is one of the most impressive examples of the Baroque in Austria. Among the many interesting things to see, it is certainly the magnificent library with its stunning frescos by the local painter Paul Troger that attracts most visitors. Other ‚must-sees’ include the Emperor’s staircase, the new Abbey Museum in the former Emperor’s apartments and the Marble Hall. For those who have a little more time to spend, it is certainly worthwhile enjoying the lush Abbey Park with the Baroque garden pavilion, the breath-taking view of the Danube from the gallery and the beauty of the renowned church of the monastery.

The palace of Grafenegg is located in the south of the village of Grafenegg and 14 km eastern of Krems. It is one of the most impressive palaces of the romantic historic of Austria. 2007 an open air stage “Wolkenturm” and auditorium were built.
The Castle of Rosenburg is set in the Kamp valley, on a rock that steeply slopes down towards the river. As one of the most significant Austrian castles, it features the biggest completely intact tiltyard in Europe. Visitors will particularly enjoy the medieval, Gothic fortifications with their Renaissance additions, the amazing library as well as the marble hall and the castle’s chapel. The castle’s terrace does not only offer a stunning view but also features daily shows with falcons, red kites and other birds of prey in free flight.
The ruins of Aggstein are located above the Danube and offer a breath-taking view over the Wachau valley. An excursion to this impressive fortress with its mythical history is always an experience. Furthermore an exhibition about the Nibelungen with its enchanting, carved characters is situated in the cellar vault.
The ruins of the Castle of Hinterhaus, which are set high above the town of Spitz on a rocky ledge of the Jauerling Mountain, offer a stunning view over the Wachau. Its fortifications and its donjon are in very good condition.
The Kunsthalle Krems displays exhibits in the areas of the visual arts, photography, design and media art. The emphasis of its renowned exhibitions lies on Austrian and international art of the 19th and 20th century, from the period of Biedermeier to the Classical Modern period and the current art scene.

The Castle of Schallaburg, which lies 5 kilometres north of Melk, is probably the most beautiful Renaissance Castle north of the Alps. The Amethyst World – an attraction for the entire family – was created around a world-wide rarity: the deposits of the Amethyst in Maissau. The initial idea of these gardens was to visualize different concepts of landscaping; the result was an amazing blend of special theme gardens. Set among the rolling hills south of the Waldviertel region and only few kilometres from Krems and Langenlois, the Adventure Gardens are the perfect venue for garden and nature lovers, who will find plenty of ideas and concepts for their own gardens.
The Arche Noah Schaugarten is set in the baroque gardens of the Castle of Schiltern. Its goals are to preserve, grow and distribute heirloom varieties and old local varieties of vegetables, field crops and fruit and thus make already forgotten kinds of plants return to our gardens. More than 800 different kinds of vegetables, herbs, ornamental plants and fruit trees are grown here according to organic principles every year.
Der Arche Noah Schaugarten befindet sich in der barocken Gartenanlage von Schloss Schiltern. Sammeln, vermehren, weitergeben, Saatgut alter Sorten wieder in die Gärten bringen – das ist das Ziel der Arche Noah. Mehr als 800 verschiedene Sorten von Gemüse, Kräutern, Zierpflanzen und Obstgehölzen werden hier jedes Jahr nach biologischen Richtlinien angebaut.

We recommend following the “poppy path” along the Große Krems and through the village. Along this path, several showcases display the history of poppy and information on some aspects of its production and consumption. You will also come across special “poppy gardens” which offer a great variety of poppy. In July, when the poppy fields are in full bloom, you will experience the Waldviertel region at its best!
