    When the Danube disappears into mist and the vineyards lie under snow, the quietest – perhaps most beautiful – time of year begins in the Wachau. Our tips for a contemplative Advent stay.

    Wachau in winter: a hidden gem

    While tour buses wind through the Danube valleys in summer, calm returns to the Wachau during Advent.     The most beautiful Christmas markets in the region

    Dürnstein – Märchenadvent. Right on our doorstep, on three Advent weekends. Small, refined, with artisan products and mulled wine from regional grapes.

    Göttweig Abbey. In the courtyard of the Baroque Benedictine monastery with grand views over the Danube valley. An experience for all senses.

    Krems – Advent market at Pfarrplatz. Larger and more urban, with ice rink and concerts. Easily reached by the Wachaubahn.

    Schönbühel Castle. Romantically situated right on the Danube. Also open on weekdays – ideal for quiet hours away from the crowds.

    Culinary highlights in Advent

    At Himmelsstiege restaurant, we serve our classics with a wintry touch during Advent: game from local hunters, chestnut cream soup, homemade gingerbread and of course fresh vanilla crescents with coffee. On selected evenings we host punch tastings based on our own sparkling wines.

    Wellness while it snows outside

    One of the loveliest Advent memories: sitting in the Finnish sauna, watching snowflakes drift over the Danube valley through the panoramic window, then stepping into the warm outdoor pool. Our Penthouse Spa is open in winter just as in any other season – only the backdrop is different.
