Apricot Blossom in the Wachau – the Most Beautiful Time for a Short Break

    Published on

When the apricot trees bloom in late March, the Wachau turns into a sea of soft pink blossoms. Discover the best time to visit and the loveliest walks through the orchards.

A natural spectacle to experience at least once in a lifetime

Every year, from late March to mid-April, the Wachau awakens from its winter sleep. More than 100,000 apricot trees along the Danube open their buds and bathe the landscape between Melk and Krems in soft pink. For many of our regular guests, the apricot blossom is the most beautiful reason of the year to travel – quieter than peak season, with mild temperatures and a light that makes the Danube shine.

When is the best time to visit?

The bloom is a fleeting pleasure: typically only ten to fourteen days. The exact start depends on the weather, traditionally around 25 March. We recommend watching the current bloom forecast and booking at short notice. To play it safe: the first week of April almost always works.

    Three special walks

    1. Dürnstein – Loiben across the apricot orchards. A leisurely circular route of about two hours, past old stone walls and with views of the Danube.

    2. The Welterbesteig section to Weißenkirchen. A bit more challenging, but with grand panoramic views over the blossoming slopes.

    3. Spitz – Tausendeimerberg. A classic for those who want to see vineyard terraces and apricots in one picture.

    Indulgence during blossom season

In our Himmelsstiege restaurant, we serve little treats from the previous apricot harvest – from apricot aperitif to the classic apricot dumpling. And if you want to take some home: our home-distilled apricot brandy is available at the hotel.

    Tip for early bookers

Rooms overlooking the vineyards are particularly popular during the apricot bloom. We recommend a phone enquiry at +43 2711 206 – we will gladly help you find the right room and the perfect travel date.
