Hiking the Welterbesteig – Stage Tips around Dürnstein
Published on
180 kilometres through one of Europe's most beautiful cultural landscapes. We present the loveliest day stages around Dürnstein – ideal for relaxed hiking.
The Welterbesteig Wachau
Over 180 kilometres and 14 stages, the Welterbesteig circles the entire Wachau – from Krems via Spitz and Aggstein to Melk and back along the opposite bank. Marked with the red-white-red logo, the trail crosses vineyard terraces, ancient forests, passes castle ruins and reaches spectacular viewpoints over the Danube again and again. If you''re not planning a multi-day tour: the finest stages also work beautifully as day trips from Dürnstein.
Stage 4: Dürnstein – Weißenkirchen
Length: 13 km · Walking time: 4 hours · Difficulty: moderate
The classic right on our doorstep. The path first leads up to the Dürnstein castle ruin (where Richard the Lionheart was once imprisoned), then along the ridge with panoramic views down to Weißenkirchen. Comfortable return by post bus or boat. Tip: stop at a wine tavern in Weißenkirchen before heading back.
Stage 5: Weißenkirchen – Spitz
Length: 10 km · Walking time: 3.5 hours · Difficulty: easy to moderate
One of the most varied sections: through vineyards, apricot orchards and along quiet forest paths. The highlight is the view from the Tausendeimerberg down to Spitz – picture-postcard perfect. The return by boat through the Wachau is the perfect finish.
Shorter loop: Vogelbergsteig
Length: 6 km · Walking time: 2.5 hours · Difficulty: moderate, sure-footedness required
Straight up from Dürnstein on narrow rocky paths, with spectacular views down to the Danube. Sturdy shoes and a head for heights recommended. An ideal half-day tour for active connoisseurs.
What to bring

- At least 1.5 litres of water per person
